Description
KM 81, 17 year type, issued when Mexico was under Spanish control, in the name of King Charles IIII. Five cents size silver coin, with the king on the obverse.Silver coins of Mexico were legal tender in the United States until 1857, and the U. S. dollar was based upon the Spanish Colonial 8 reales coin (formal name: "Peso de 8 reales"). One real became known as one "bit"; this is why "2 bits" equals a quarter dollar.
