Antique Union Porcelain Works (UPW) Oyster Plate, Turquoise Background, Naturalistic
Before the first bid we welcome offers on this oyster plate. After bidding starts we can no longer accept offers.
.This striking antique oyster plate was made by the Union Porcelain Works of Greenpoint, New York, in the latter half of the nineteenth century. UPW was the first United States company to make oyster plates. Their plates were all hand decorated with three dimensional sea creatures and sea life and were sought after from the beginning. This clam shape oyster plate has a very desireable color palette. Usually only the seaweed and sea life are colored on UPW plates, and there is a background color of cream or some other neutral shade. This plate, however, has pale pink all the way to the rim with turquoise seaweed. There are naturalistic accents in coral, black, brown, and gray. This oyster plate is in fine condition - no chips, hairlines, or repairs. On the back there is "UPW" and the UPW logo, as well as "Pat Jan 4, 1881." The plate is 8 3/8 inches by 6 3/8 inches.
